In Search Of....

This week I went on an interesting journey, I was on search of a white heron. I went to a drainage ditch in Gulf Breeze in search to find one, it was very interesting. The journey there was interesting, it started with me forgetting my binoculars at home, and not realizing I didn’t have them until I was halfway to my destination.

On the way I started daydreaming and thought about being a kid growing up in New Orleans with a huge drainage ditch in my grandmother's backyard. My cousins and I would hop the fences and walk along the sides when my parents were away, and just observing the wildlife. Catching tadpoles, frogs, and even skipping a rock or two.

This time I didn’t have a bucket to catch tadpoles, but I did have my phone on me to try and find the white heron.

When walked upon the drainage ditch, I found that the water level was super low, and there was no wildlife to be found. It’s interesting because there are usually turtles sticking their heads above the water, as well as ducks and waterfowls.

Immediately I thought about how it has not rained around here in a long time that’s the reason for the water being so low. But the reason for no animals was still something I wondered.

So instead of being upset and leaving I walked down by the ditch and sat down. Pulled out my sandwich and started playing music on my phone. As the low melodies played, I just thought about how important wildlife is and if I'm doing enough to preserve it.

I believe that Sylvia would have been happy with the trip in the wild. The only issue she would have is that I drove to the ditch instead of walked. But other than that, I feel she would feel that I was one of the good guys and I wasn’t there to harm anyone or anything.

I hope one day I am able to find the white heron; I will definitely revisit after it rains to see if the white heron resurfaces.
